Spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive planthopper that feeds on plant sap. Eggs, black-and-white early nymphs, red fourth-instar nymphs and gray-winged adults look different enough that each stage needs to be identified separately.
Location matters. Check the current Massachusetts infestation map before deciding whether a sighting is already inside a known area.
If you find a suspected spotted lanternfly in a community that is not shown on the current map, take clear photos, note the exact location and report it. In a known infestation, inspect anything that could carry adults, nymphs or egg masses off the site.
Fresh masses are covered by a gray-beige waxy layer; older masses can crack and expose rows of seed-like eggs.
The final immature stage is wingless and develops vivid red patches before becoming an adult.
Adults are roughly one inch long. The rear part of each forewing has a darker, net-like speckled pattern.
Tree-of-heaven foliage is a useful host-plant clue. Overwintered eggs hatch in spring, and early nymphs are black with white spots.
By midsummer, the fourth instar is red, black and white; adults begin appearing later in summer.
Adults feed, gather and mate. The first egg masses typically appear in mid-to-late September and continue to be laid through fall.
Hard freezes end adult activity, but egg masses remain outdoors through winter and hatch the following spring.
Compare the insect or egg mass with the life stages above. Take one close photo for identification and one wider photo that shows the plant, vehicle or surface where it was found.
If the town is not shown on the current Massachusetts infestation map, report the sighting with the photo and exact location. If the town is already mapped, focus on preventing the insect or egg masses from being moved elsewhere.
Do not move a live specimen, infested firewood, nursery stock or outdoor equipment to another location for identification.

Spotted lanternfly can jump or fly over short distances, but movement between towns is often helped by people. Adults and nymphs can ride on vehicles and equipment, while egg masses can remain attached to hard outdoor surfaces for months. That makes an object that looks clean at first glance a possible pathway to a new location.
Egg masses are not limited to tree bark. They can be laid on stone, fencing, patio furniture, grills, trailers, recreational vehicles, sheds, firewood and other relatively flat surfaces. Items stored close to host trees deserve extra attention because adults may gather nearby during the fall egg-laying period.
The useful time to inspect is before the object is moved. Check vehicles before leaving an infested site, and look over outdoor furniture, equipment, firewood and trailers before taking them to another property, storage area or town. Removing a hitchhiking adult or an egg mass after arrival is too late to prevent the movement itself.
For vehicles, concentrate on exterior surfaces where an insect can rest unnoticed: doors and body panels, bumpers, wheel wells, the grille, roof and areas around cargo. For stored items, check sheltered edges, undersides, seams and flat faces rather than looking only at the most visible surface.
Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is an invasive tree common in disturbed and urban sites. A single compound leaf can be 1–4 feet long, with many leaflets along a central stem. The leaflet edges are mostly smooth, with one or two glandular teeth near the base; crushed leaves and twigs have a strong unpleasant odor.
Tree-of-heaven, grape and black walnut are among the most useful host plants to inspect through the season. Nymphs may also use poison ivy and Asiatic bittersweet; adults may gather on maple and birch in fall.
Do not simply cut a suspected tree-of-heaven. Cutting can trigger vigorous stump and root sprouts. Confirm the plant first, then use an appropriate control method.

Nymphs and adults feed on sap. Where many insects are feeding, the plant or objects underneath can become coated with honeydew, a sugary waste product. Honeydew is sticky, attracts ants, wasps and other insects, and supports the growth of dark sooty mold.
Grapevines are among the plants at greatest risk. On many other plants, heavy feeding can cause stress and nuisance problems without automatically meaning the tree is dying.
A large infestation can also become a quality-of-life problem in late summer and fall because adults may swarm and honeydew can coat yards, vehicles and surfaces below feeding sites.
Spotted lanternflies do not bite or sting people or pets.
There is no evidence that spotted lanternflies are poisonous if eaten. Even so, keep pets from eating large numbers of wild insects and call a veterinarian if an animal has an unusual reaction.
No stinger. Not known to bite or attack people.
Pet concern: there is no evidence that the insect is poisonous if ingested, but avoid large ingestion.
Real concern: plants, honeydew, sooty mold, nuisance swarms and spread to new areas.
Several insects can be mistaken for spotted lanternfly, especially in a blurry photo. Common look-alikes include tiger bee flies, underwing moths, tiger moths, boxelder bugs, milkweed bugs, stink bugs, fishflies and giant leopard moths.
Egg masses also have look-alikes, including spongy moth egg masses, mantis egg cases, tent caterpillar egg masses, crust fungi, lichen, tree sap and mud-dauber nests.
If the insect or egg mass does not match the full life-stage pattern, take a sharp photo and compare the complete shape, markings and life stage before reporting it.

September is the transition from a mostly adult problem to an adult-and-egg-mass problem. Adults are already active in Massachusetts, feeding on woody stems, gathering on preferred hosts and mating. The first egg masses may appear from mid-to-late September, so inspections that found only adults earlier in the month may begin finding eggs as fall progresses.
October broadens what homeowners should look for. Adults can remain active until a hard freeze, while new egg masses accumulate on bark and on man-made surfaces. A property can therefore show two life stages at once: visible adults on trunks and vines, and much less conspicuous gray-beige egg masses on nearby objects.
This timing also overlaps with normal fall activity around a home. Patio furniture is stored, grills are moved, firewood is stacked, trailers and recreational vehicles are relocated, and yard equipment is put away. Those ordinary movements matter because an egg mass can stay attached through winter and hatch the following spring.
Fall inspections should therefore widen beyond host plants. Check tree trunks for adults, but also scan stone, fencing, sheds, furniture, vehicles and equipment—especially objects that have been sitting near infested trees. Once a hard freeze ends adult activity, the visible insects disappear, but the egg masses remain.
In September and October, check host plants for adults, inspect outdoor objects for new egg masses and look over vehicles and equipment before they leave a known infested site.
Small numbers of adults or nymphs can be squished or smashed, especially on vehicles or materials that are about to be moved.
Scrape and crush the eggs, or scrape them into rubbing alcohol or soapy water and leave them for at least 24 hours before disposal.
Hand removal will not control a large population. Inspect regularly, monitor host plants and choose a control method that matches the size of the infestation.
Circle traps and sticky bands can catch climbing nymphs. If sticky bands are used, cover them with a raised mesh guard so birds, bats and other animals do not become trapped.
Chemical treatment is mainly for heavy infestations when simpler methods are not enough. Common active ingredients include bifenthrin, beta-cyfluthrin, carbaryl, natural pyrethrins, zeta-cypermethrin, dinotefuran and imidacloprid. Some uses are restricted in Massachusetts and require a licensed applicator. Use any pesticide only where its label allows it, and avoid treating blooming plants when pollinators are active.
Do not simply cut it down. Tree-of-heaven can respond with vigorous root sprouts; plant control should follow a proper management plan.
For a heavy infestation, choose treatment based on the plant, site, season and current product label.
Mendon announced a confirmed infestation on August 25, 2026; Sharon and Sherborn announced local detections on September 1; Clinton announced a confirmed infestation on September 3. Those recent findings show why the live state map is more useful than a fixed town list.

The first established breeding population in Massachusetts was detected in Fitchburg, Worcester County, in 2021. Additional populations have been found since then.
