Do not remove a furnace panel, disconnect vent piping, climb onto an icy roof or insert a stick, brush, vacuum, compressed air or garden hose into a combustion vent. Pushing material farther inside can turn a visible obstruction into a hidden one.
A furnace that starts and stops, will not ignite, or enters lockout may be responding to an airflow or venting problem. It may also have an unrelated ignition, pressure, condensate, electrical or control fault. Seeing wildlife near the vent can make the animal explanation tempting, but the heating system still needs proper diagnosis.
If a blockage is visible, do not defeat pressure switches, remove safety covers, reset the furnace over and over, or improvise a temporary vent path. The safe sequence is to identify the vent, deal with any live wildlife appropriately, clear or repair the vent correctly, and then have normal operation confirmed.

Dead-animal smell: a mouse, bird or other small animal can die in ductwork, a vent path or a nearby wall/ceiling cavity, and the odor may become more noticeable when the heating system starts moving air. The strongest smell at a register does not prove that the carcass is inside that duct; air movement can carry odor from another location.
Do not use smell to rule out a gas emergency. Natural gas and propane are odorized so leaks can smell sulfurous, like rotten eggs or sometimes skunk-like.
