Which “Furnace Vent” Is Actually Involved?

This distinction changes both the safety risk and the person you should call.

Combustion-air intake: brings outdoor air to some fuel-burning furnaces. A nest or animal obstruction can interfere with normal combustion and may cause the furnace to shut down.

Check whether there are one or two nearby pipes, whether the opening is under a deck or shrub, and whether snow, leaves or vegetation are also restricting airflow. A photo and ground-level visual check are useful. Reaching into a combustion vent is not the same as inspecting it.

If the Furnace Will Not Start or Keeps Shutting Down

A blocked vent is one possible cause, not a diagnosis.

A furnace that starts and stops, will not ignite, or enters lockout may be responding to an airflow or venting problem. It may also have an unrelated ignition, pressure, condensate, electrical or control fault. Seeing wildlife near the vent can make the animal explanation tempting, but the heating system still needs proper diagnosis.

If a blockage is visible, do not defeat pressure switches, remove safety covers, reset the furnace over and over, or improvise a temporary vent path. Match the Symptom Before You Assume the Animal Is the Cause

Pressure-Switch or Draft Error After Summer? Check the Vent Before Replacing Parts

This is one of the most useful late-fall clues, but it still is not a DIY diagnosis.

Many fuel-burning furnaces use a pressure switch or similar safety logic to confirm that the inducer and vent system are moving combustion air as expected. On systems designed this way, a blocked combustion-air inlet or exhaust can prevent ignition or shut the burners down.

If the furnace worked last winter, sat mostly idle through warm weather, and now shows a pressure-switch, draft or blocked-vent message on the first real heating call, look from ground level for a nest, leaves, insect material, rodent debris, snow or another obvious obstruction at the outdoor termination. Photograph what you see before anyone disturbs it.

Do not jumper or bypass the pressure switch. The switch is part of the furnace safety system, and a fault can also come from condensate drainage, the inducer, pressure tubing, vent configuration or another equipment problem. Removing a visible nest does not automatically prove the vent path and furnace are safe.

Removing the Nest Is Not the Same as Clearing the Furnace

A visible cleanup does not prove that the full vent path is clear or that the furnace is safe to run.
